Not a whole lot to say...Just thinking about the fragility of life. A friend of ours here in Bisbee, Russell Dunn, has suffered a severe brain hemhorrage and is clinging to life in a hospital in Phoenix. We're all sending him good thoughts and holding the space for him. But, at the same time, it seems he may have "left the building".

Looks like I've got a new dog in my life...Benito was wandering on Hwy 80 about 5 miles outside Bisbee about a week ago and I pulled over and picked him up. No tags, a bit skinny...how could someone dump such a sweetie (yet I hear it happens all the time). After making the necessary calls to find out if anyone reported him missing, I adopted him.

Coatamundi Tales...the continuing saga

Now I DO know how the little critter was getting in! It's a place in my bedroom (eek!) where a pipe goes up to the attic. There was enough space for him to squeeze through and now there is plastic there. I just happened to be cleaning the shelves where he chewed up my bra and heard him pulling on the plastic, so, I jammed my cleaning cloth up in the hole and then taped it up with electrical tape. Now, I jammed two hardbound volumes (Carolina Nature and Tree Identification) just under the spot so that when he makes his way past the cloth (which I'm pretty sure he will) and then chews through the electrical tape (wouldn't put it past him), he will find that the area is too small to squeeze through because of the books. What can I say? I'm spooked. I can hear him rustling around in the attic space trying to figure out another plan. Suppertime...he wants IN.

A Strange Visitor In The House

So, this evening I was sitting in the living room of my house watching a DVD with Ray...and, I see out of the corner of my eye what I think is a kitten with a long and bushy tail coming out of my kitchen...WHAT the %#$k? How did it get in my house, anyway?

Turns out it's a Ring Tailed Cat - the Arizona State Mammal, amazingly enough. It slinked into my bedroom and under my bed. Then, it wandered into the living room and under the couch. I was barefoot and being a bit wimpy about it possibly being rabid, although it seemed quite docile.

Ray helped by ushering it toward an open door, which it eventually found. But, first, while it was in my bedroom it started climbing the shelving. That's when I captured it in this photo (because even I kind of wasn't believing that this little creature found its way into my house).

So, here it is - my little visitor...it's still a mystery as to how and where it entered my house!

Autumn is here! There's a crispness in the air and the skies are beautiful. Maybe we're not really ready for the temps to drop into the 40's overnight, but, it seems Mother Nature is heading in that direction whether we're ready or not. Ah, well...bring it on! I've got my pilot light lit on the heater and can handle it! (I think).

Here's a photo I took yesterday at Whitewater Draw. Ray & I took a wonderful and amazing drive out to the Chiricahuas and then crossed the mountain pass to the other side. What a wonderland of scenery, all in one day! I'll post a shot from the Chiricahuas as well. For now, here's some serenity with birds and water at sunset. Thanks to Ray for "posing" for the shot...

Back from California!

And, I'm so glad to be back!

I journeyed to San Diego County last Monday with my guy, Ray, for a road trip to see my sister on her farm there. The drive was long and fun. By the time we reached Southern California, the network of freeways and masses of traffic reminded me again how much I love my life here in Bisbee.

Nonetheless, we had a great time! Side trips each day to places like Julian and Fallbrook, Pacific Beach (and more). Eating home grown organic basil, heirloom tomatoes and drinking wine. Yummy! I even came home with a car! My sister sold me her '90 BMW for a small price and now I have something smaller and more economical to drive around here (when I drive).

Today was a very special day. I was invited by my good friend Gretchen to photograph her demonstration of how to paint an Art Envoy pantsuit. How could I refuse?

So, Gretchen & Bingo dressed the part in brightly colored pantsuits and created a beautiful Pantsuit covered Pantsuit right before my very eyes (and camera).

No, I'm not hung up on the whole memorial thing (although I've watched a bit of it on nytimes.com). But, Michael Jackson really was one of the greatest musical talents of the past century and into this one. It's sad that his life was cut short at the young age of 50.

Whatever strange things he did, he did bring a lot of happiness to fans of music, dance and fun to countless many.

May he rest in peace...

Hey folks...head to the 24 hour parking lot next to the ATM in Old Bisbee... Sculptor Ilene Deely and her husband are hauling a very cool sculpture she made of the Statue of Liberty with Bruce Lee's kick-ass leg on it. It's an 8 ft. cast bronze enlargement of the sculpture "Liberty, Let's Roll".

Lovely Southeast Arizona Sunset From The Divide

Javelina Crossing

Last evening at dusk I took a walk up West Blvd. to the top of the Divide with my friend Marnie. I hadn't walked that route before (but, plan to again!). On the way up, we had to stop for a crossing of at least 20 Javelinas that crossed from one side of the canyon to the other side for the night. You really need to give those oversized rodents a wide berth. So, we watched for about 10 minutes as each last baby and adult made their way across. It was a sight (and smell) to behold.

I wish my camera had behaved...I took several shots that turned out blurry. So, this one must suffice. But, you get the idea....

An update on the sad demise of Rose Johnson

As Gretchen has pointed out and posted, the alcohol that Rose Johnson had ingested was spiked with Methanol in a small rice wine facility in Bali. At this point, the owner of the facility and two employees have been arrested. 25 people have died from this travesty.

I post the article here to update you all.

Also, Terry Wolf has posted that the location of Rose's mural at the Jonquil Motel in Bisbee is the place where friends can leave flowers and notes (no candles please) and there is a gathering in the planning stages for some time on Sunday. As well, Kate Drew-Wilkinson's front window facing the main street in Old Bisbee is also being devoted to the memory of Rose this week. Stop by Kate's gallery for more information.

Rose Johnson - Bisbee Artist - Rest in Peace

I must preface this post by saying that I did not know Rose. But, her spirit is all over Bisbee...on the lips of her many friends, and in the lovely art that graces some of the local businesses. It is indeed tragic, the circumstances that preceded her passing...She has been residing in Bali, Indonesia with her new husband and had apparently consumed an alcoholic drink called Arak was laced with methanol and contributed to her demise. I have no further words. It's just so awful.

So, in honor of the beautiful and talented Rose Johnson, I leave you with these two YouTube videos of her.

Took A Little Drive - To Patagonia!

Today's weather made me feel introspective and quiet. And, true to my instincts, I had to get in the car and drive so that I could feel the open road under my wheels. I ended up in the charming artist town of Patagonia.

Not much happened except for the amazing scenery I witnessed on the drive. It was a not talking day. So, with the exception of buying lunch and purchasing a couple of really great bargain clothes at a store called Camel Parts, I didn't utter a word.

I liked it.

I sure can't complain about the rain we've had over these past few days. It's beautiful to see the skies darken and the fog hugging the tops of the mountains. And, there's just nothing nicer than the sound of the rain on the roof.

Gee...you'd think that description would be accompanied by a couple of photos of the scenes described here. But, NOOOOO....I didn't take any. There's still a chance, however. I think we're gonna see a little more of that rain over the next few days.

Oh Oh...Fire in Bisbee

Looks like we've got ourselves a situation here...

At about 11 a.m. this morning, a fire began while crews were removing a power pole that showered sparks on the dry brush near the Divide in Bisbee. The fire rapidly spread up the hill and then down the other side.

The Highland Park area on West Blvd. has been mandatorily evacuated. Hopefully those homes will remain intact.

As I write this, I am hearing and seeing planes flying overhead to dump fire retardant on the fire and keep it from spreading. Hwy 80 is closed to thru traffic all the way to the junction at 90 heading toward Sierra Vista. Smoke fills the air.

Since there are seven, count 'em, seven fire departments fighting the blaze, I'm hoping for the best.

Ok, it's really fun. All my friends are there (except Flying Mermaid). And, I can type little snippets of conversation and receive 15 comments on it over a half hour period. Instant gratification, with a few chuckles added on. It seems that no matter what else my friends are doing, they seem to also be at their computers (and on Facebook, too). Hmmm

What to do, then, with this blog? Well, that's a good question.

Art Mart 3 in Bisbee Was a Hit!

Saturday night's third annual Art Mart 3 show at Kathleen Pearson's studio in Old Bisbee was great fun!

Well, we made quite a spectacle, wearing our shiny garb and walking up Brewery Gulch toward the mountain trek up to the Shrine today at high noon.

Satan was in attendance, but Big Brass was keeping him in check.

Still, since Chew Mee (I mean Satan) brought the explosives, we had to be careful....

Louise was there all dolled up for Easter, but, all she cared about was drinking the Limoncello...

The HCA was represented, giving their blessing to the strange ritual about to take place.

And, then...Andre was put out of his misery. Yes, I know that you folks don't know about Andre. There's a good reason for that - Andre was laid at my doorstep by Chew Mee, after I was chosen to give him sanctuary while he "slept". You need to check out Louise's Blog for more information about that. For now, my work here is done!

Ok, I'm kidding ...but, Main Street was closed to traffic today for the Copper Classic Car Show. It was quite the display of fancy, shiny, colorful cars, hot rods, low riders and a few dust covered and otherwise rusted vehicles. I kinda liked it.

After about 20 minutes of wandering among the cars with my camera, it began to snow a bit and I headed home. Later it poured for a few minutes, giving way to brilliant Arizona sunshine.

Not much more to report, as I decided to hole up at home for the rest of the afternoon & evening. What can I say? Cold weather makes me want to hibernate!

Full Moon in the Desert

This evening I went out with bisbohemian & his lovely wife to Terry Wolf's Full Moon gathering in the desert. It's a good thing we rode out in their jeep, since the road was rocky and bumpy the whole way once we got off the main road. But, wow, was it worth it!

Terry's "off the grid" property is magical. We all gazed out at the several mountain ranges we could see from our comfy spots around the big bonfire. And, as the Full Pink Moon rose, we got to howling, setting off the wolves Terry owns.

The party is probably still going on...we just have early mornings tomorrow. But, at least we got to hear a couple of songs around the crackling fire.

So nice!

Coronado National Memorial

It's been a few days since I've posted anything on my blog. So, I'm making up for lost time by posting a couple of photos from a place I visited today with a friend - the Coronado National Memorial. WOW...pretty dramatic country in these parts! I looked down across the vast landscape that encompassed both Arizona and Mexico...and, I could practically hear the hoof-beats of horses long past, and explorers discovering (and often dying for it) a new land.

Greetings to all, and to all a pleasant evening. No, this is not a Bisbee photo (it's on Canyon Road in Santa Fe). I just like to attach a photo to my posts. Life seems so, well, black and white otherwise.

Not a lot to report...just keeping the blog fires burning! It was a gorgeous and sunny day here in our Tiny Town. Familiar faces at the post office, the bank and the store. All is well.

Damn! What is it when the gods of chaos step in to throw me off track just when I'm intent on finishing a creative project!

I took a nice walk this morning to have breakfast before coming home to print & frame 6 photographs for this weekend's SWAN Day show here in Bisbee. When I returned home, I noticed that my tire on my van was F L A T. I mean, no air whatsoever. It was full when I walked away, I swear. Anyway, the AAA truck barely made it up my narrow Old Bisbee street and filled the tire, just to remove it again and apply the spare. Third tire this month. WTF? I spent the next several hours heading to Sierra Vista for a new tire and back here. If it's vandals, I'm gonna kick their asses if I ever catch them. If it's the Arizona sun taking its toll on rubber that hits the road, well, I shake my fist in the air and curse (and take my credit card out of my purse....hey, that rhymes).

So, now the photos are done - Epson printer died on me while the project was in mid-process. I have a Canon printer as well. I'm not as pleased, but, the finished work looks pretty good. Just in time to deliver to the convention center tomorrow morning.

Gee...that was fun. I wonder if any will sell this weekend? Check out the show all over Bisbee. My work will be hanging at the High Desert Market Saturday & Sunday. I'll be there too...

On this lovely Spring weekend, it sure was nice to enjoy a Sunday early evening attending the house concert featuring the lovely and amazingly talented Natalia Zukerman. All I can say is - WOW! (I really do have other words, but, they don't seem to come right now). She's amazing!

Thanks to our dear friend Wendy Layton for bringing Natalia to Bisbee to grace us all with her talent and presence. We enjoyed Natalia's wit and humor, her beautiful voice, and her very skillful guitar playing. The subtle nuances of her strings, the lyrics she writes and sings...I am in awe!

Thanks again Wendy - a hundred thousand thanks! We love you Natalia!

Feels Like Summer! (And, it just became Spring!)

Wow...this being my first ever Springtime in Arizona, I've got to wonder if the next two weeks will bring 100 degree temps! Sure is beautiful right now. My peach tree has had pink blossoms on it for about two weeks now. All of a sudden, the blossoms are dropping, making way for fresh new green leaves. Beautiful!

I hope this finds everyone enjoying this lovely Equinox of Spring. I sure am!

Venus DeMars, Jason Lytle, Plushies & More!

hat a weekend! Bisbee buzzed with activity and entertainment into the wee hours of morning. First, we were entertained by Jason Lytle and band in the Starlite Cabaret on Saturday night. They played to a full house, which was a great success.

Late Saturday night I attended the Moulin Rouge/Absinthe Tasting party in the Gulch. Thanks to Carrie & Christi, Dr. Suzanne Walsh, Juliette Beaumont and a cast of more than I can name, it was incredible. I've decided the Parisien Absinthe is my favorite. But, I did sample them both. Live dangerously...taste bravely!

Sunday afternoon, Venus DeMars returned to Bisbee from St. Paul, MN and performed an amazing solo concert for us at Elmo's. The theme was "Plushies", so, many in the crowd wore fuzzy, plushy animal costumes (why? because...). Lynette, Venus' wife, read a handful of her lovely poems, which was an added treat. Such talent!

Howling at the Moon

It's a full Worm Moon today. How about that? I guess this would be a really good thing, if you're a bird. The best thing about it, though, is that it's gonna be a beautiful sight as the moon rises above B Hill and illuminates our town this evening.

As of yet, I don't have a full moon photo taken in Bisbee. So, I'm attaching one I had taken in Pacific Grove, California...with a promise to try & get a great shot tonight!

Party Animals at Elmo's

I braved the "rain" yesterday when I really did want to just stay in (which many of you must have done, since I didn't see you there), and trudged down to the gulch to Elmo's for the Fifth Annual Pisces Party. I'm not even a Pisces.

Buzz & The Soul Senders were entertaining the crowd with their awsome music. I kicked back on a bar stool at the back of the room with my feet up on another. Drink in hand, entertained - four guys back there were vying for my attention (yeah, it's flattering). They were all gentlemen, which was a relief. I was comfortable in my perch and really didn't want to get into the "bar talk" that sometimes ensues. One of them told me I was the Poster Child for Relaxation. (Sorry, no one took that photo of me...you know how I am...mostly on the viewing end of the camera).

About the time I was about to leave, I walked by Sally Holcolm who was sitting up at the bar with Seldom Seen Laura. They were enjoying the party along with Juliette Beaumont, Christi, and Kerri, who were hard at work serving libations. We partook....

I'm adding a few photos, wishing now I'd taken even more. The evening turned out to be a blast. Rain and all....

I Want a ROAD TRIP!

It's the time of year I really want to be out on the road - the illusion that we're in for clear weather and smooth sailing for months ahead. Actually, that was before I moved to Arizona, where we have Monsoons (which I do love, but, fear driving too far in them). Not that harsh weather has ever stopped me from taking a road trip before. Today's cloudiness is due to winds blowing from the Sea of Cortez, or so says Marnie. I'm still in my third season here and really have no idea. It's all a wonderful awakening to the fact that I'm not in Kansas (rather, California) anymore.

To me it's all good. So, I'll leave you with a pic I took from the front seat (the only seat besides the driver's seat) of my friend Robert's Porsche while on our way out to the Chiricahua's last summer.

UFO's? Or, just another day at the Rock Wonderland?

Yesterday, Mira and I took a long drive out to Flying Mermaid's Rock Wonderland out in the beautiful desert outside of Douglas. I hadn't been there since the Hillary Clinton Island birthday bash, and it was nice to return. Especially, I was excited for my daughter to see such an amazing place.

Emily (a.k.a. Flying Mermaid) made us feel right at home, and we were there until I wrenched us out of there right before dark. This will make time #2 that I've taken a wrong turn trying to find our way back to the highway (which is on about 2 miles or so of dirt road with tiny signs, if any signs exist at all). This would be a good time to have a helicopter...

The very first thing we saw when we arrived was this bizarre "O" cloud. Is this a sign from the Shadow People? Hard to even imagine...

Wolf Pup Takes Over Copper Queen!

Last evening a group of friends met at the Copper Queen for libations & conversation. Slowly, as the evening evolved, more friends arrived, including the talented Terry Wolf. After a short while, she disappeared for a few minutes, only to return with this 10 week old - so far unnamed - bundle of furry delight. It's her new wolf pup bitch, recently arrived from California. We all fell in love!

More later on this and other stuff. Right now, Mira & I are headed out to Flying Mermaid's Rock Castle in the desert!

Ok, this is my blog and I can make it look however I want...But, seriously, this morning when Mira and I went over to Dot's Diner, the folks from a new travel channel called Halogen were there with cameras. They are doing tv spots on some of our Bisbee beloved businesses, including the Shady Dell, Dot's Diner, Bisbee Bicycle Brothel and more.

The couple sitting next to us at the diner didn't want to be photographed (running from the law, perhaps?), so, we jumped in and did our part.

Saturday Afternoon in Bisbee

I'm having a really great visit with my daughter here in Bisbee. So far Mira's met several of my new friends here. And, if she considered me to be at bit bizarre before, she's really convinced now.

Saturday's highlights included some nice walks along Mai

n St. and then the Gulch. Then, a visit to Kate Pearson's studio - where she & Diane Bombshelter were busy painting and generally having fun. Kate is preparing Melmac art plates for her upcoming show in Tucson (see invite here). Diane is creating some wonderful Black Velvet paintings for the ART MART 3 show here in Bisbee at Kate's studio on April 18th from 5-10 p.m.

Then, we walked over to the Copper Queen to listen to the velvet voice of Terry Wolf, who was playing on the patio. Beautiful!

I know I say this often, but, I'm gonna say it again -

I feel so happy to live here!

My Daughter Visits Bisbee!!!

Good morning Bisbee! It looks like it's going to be yet another beautiful day here in Tiny Town (I didn't coin the term...I have our friend Juliette Beaumont, the bartender at Elmo's to thank).

I've got the wonderful "hurry up & wait" task of needing to wait for a visit from the cable company to deal with the inconsistent internet connection I have. But, the next few hours are mine alone. Nice.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to picking up my lovely daughter, Mira, at the airport in Tucson this evening and having her here in Bisbee for a week! I moved here last June on the same day she left for her travels in India, Cambodia and Thailand this past summer. She's a world traveler, and it will be very cool to show her my new home.

I'm hoping to introduce her to as many of my new Bisbee friends as possible. We'll be seeing you around...

Lately Louise has been heckling we Bisbee-ans. She's shown up at Roka and has given the waitstaff a hard time (especially Jess). And, she's also threatening to make some unsuspecting person who has partaken in the Gimp pass-along give her sippy under the Iron Man for a year.

I don't know about all of you, but, I'm thinking maybe we ought to intervene - either that or she's gonna bring more of her monkey friends and take over. See what I mean in this video.

Bisbee Sunset (up to the moment)

I was JUST outside on my porch photographing the amazing sunset we just had here in Bisbee. I sure wish I had been able to get some distance from the power lines, but, the light changes quickly. So, I went with it!

This day has been heavenly...all my windows are wide open (and the Bisbee insects have enjoyed that, which I won't go into right now). I did some laundry and hung it on the line. It dried in no time. Amazing, after living in a foggy and moist climate for most of my adult life. I like this.

Dot's Diner - So Swingin'!

Reporting back from Dot's Diner - Yes, the breakfast was awesome. The eggs were perfectly prepared (over medium, just like I ordered)...the two pancakes were just the right texture and not huge or draping over the plate...the bacon was incredible (specially delivered from The Pork Shop in Phoenix). Served up by "K", otherwise known as Kristine, it was just so fun. Plus, the place is so totally in the period of the 50's - right down to the streaming music and authentic commercials on the sound system.

If I wasn't so full, I would have sampled one of their housemade shakes or malts. I got to watch Kristine make one for some out of town guests, as it was. Served up in a vintage glass with whipped cream and a cherry on top. Cool!

Jennifer, with her wonderful graphic design skills, has created some vintage looking "Dot's Diner" coffee cups - nice touch for tourists & locals alike to purchase and take home.

I highly recommend a visit to Dot's in your very near future. By the way, it's on the same property as the vintage trailer park for guests - The Shady Dell! Check it out!

Another Day - What's Bisbee Up To?

Emily Decks Out for the Sandman Show at Elmo's

Yesterday afternoon a bunch of us went down to St. Elmo's in Brewery Gulch to hear our friend Sandman perform his unique blend of Cowboy Rap and Poetry (you've got to hear it to understand - check out his website).

One of our own - Emily - was sporting quite the amazing outfit...which used to belong to Sammy Davis, Jr.! She says a friend of hers back in New Jersey passed it along to her after a photo shoot with said Sammy.

Now, I think that's just way cool!

Re-Painting the Hillcar With Gretchen

It is an amazingly beautiful day here in the tiny town of Bisbee. Temps in the high 70's, blue skies with wispy clouds, sultry and warm. I could not be indoors if I had to (which, fortunately, I didn't have to once I got off work at 10 this morning).

So, Gretchen gave me a call and asked if I'd like to help her do some paint touch-up on the famous Hillcar. Hell yeah! Why not! I walked up the Gulch and we set out painting with small brushes and cans of highly toxic sign paint. Oh yeah...we're living dangerously now.

People regularly pull over to gaze and often photograph the Hillcar, which was kind of fun to observe from our vantage point. I really think Gretchen needs to put one of those metal boxes that are posted at "you've got to pay to use this park" places. People could drop their donations in the handy slot when they're photographing themselves next to the Hillcar so they can show their friends back home how much fun Bisbee is. And, Gretchen can continue to be the HCA Ambassador of Art that she does so well. (Well, that's what we think, anyway...and, I know we're right!)

Sir Cheese Puff Visits Bisbee

This afternoon, while hanging out with Gretchen, we were paid a visit from .... SIR CHEESE PUFF.

It's kind of ironic that he was canvassing the Gulch, since just last night a group of us had been tasting some varieties of cheese puffs at a small gathering and including our "two cents worth" about which was the best. Somehow, I'm thinking that this is some sort of Bisbee Synchronicity (which doesn't surprise me, the more I get to know this town).

So, Sir Cheese Puff had two special bags of cheese puffs to sample with us. He was very intent on doing the best job possible at finding out our feedback regarding flavor, crunch factor, and overall goodness. I noticed he took his job quite seriously, as he was dressed in a cheese-puff colored jumpsuit and had a strangely cheese-puff looking mustache. (When asked about that, he just looked at me questioningly...so, I just let it go).

Anyway, at this point it seems that the Barbara's Baked Cheese Puffs won the taste test. But, we did enjoy alternating them with the Little Bear Lite Cheddar Puffs. Ultimately, Ivy the cat chose the Baked as well.

Anyone out there have a cheese puff preference they'd like to share? Maybe we can send Sir Cheese Puff your way next, or organize a party! He's gonna be in town for a little while. In fact, when he's not going door to door offering cheese puff tastings, he is otherwise known as Sandman, the Rappin' Cowboy. Yahoooooo!

Another Sunny Day in Bisbee

Fishin' for something to blog about

I know I haven't blogged much of late. Who knew that I'd become somewhat necessary in the banter of the Bisbee Blogging World. Hell, I love that! And, I want to do my part!

So, since I don't want to bitch & moan about my toothache anymore...I'm gonna share some couple of day old news.

The other day, I had breakfast with love23 (the artist also known as Kate Pearson) and El Change'O (the artist otherwise known as Gretchen - AND Sandman (the artist known as Sandman) at the Bisbee Breakfast Club. I can't tell you how great it is to be surrounded by such great folks and wonderful talent. None of us burst out in song, started sketching, or even grabbed a photo op (what's WRONG with us for not at least grabbing a picture!). But, I did find this awesome video of Sandman on YouTube.

Since he's coming back to town, I do believe, I hope everyone (including me, since I missed the house concert) will turn out and show him some love!

Maybe it's just me laying low (but, I kind of don't think so). The snow is melting...the sun is shining. It's still chilly, but not so bad. I've got a toothache that I'm gonna travel to Mexico to deal with tomorrow & sure could use some moral support.
